Since 01 April 2011 Vietnam Railways will open tourist class trains from Hanoi to Da Nang. Each Tourist cabin consists of 04 berths.  This type of cabin will be suitable for leisure travelers.  Passengers will stay one night on the train with friendly and attentive staff who will provide support to passengers.  This train will stop at stations : Nam Dinh - Ninh Binh - Thanh Hoa - Vinh - Dong Hoi - Dong Ha - Hue before final stop at Da Nang Railway station at 07h50' the next day. With the purpose to give travelers good quality transportation service by train in Vietnam. This train will serve mostly local and international Tourist at a fixed departure and arrival time

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Depart London
Day 2: Hanoi. Morning arrival in Hanoi, check-in to a downtown hotel and afternoon free to relax or explore the area before an evening trip to see the City’s unique water-puppet show.
Day 3: Hanoi. Day tour of this beautiful old city with its French colonial architecture: lakes, parks and temples and a stroll through the bustling backstreets of the old quarter.
Day 4: Halong Bay. Explore the incredible scenery of World Heritage Halong Bay by boat on a day cruise through the dramatic limestone scenery. Evening return to Hanoi.
Day 5: Remote Pu Luong National Park. Leaving the capital we’ll head into the scenic mountainous region of Hoa Binh Province where we’ll continue along forest trails by 4WD to Pu Luong – one of Vietnam’s remotest and most spectacular national parks. Afternoon jungle hike to discover the regions amazing flora and fauna and overnight in the ethnic White Tai village of Mai Chau.
Day 6: Halong of the Rice Fields. Scenic drive through the lush paddy fields and jagged limestone escarpments of this region, sometimes known as the ‘Halong of the rice fields’, to the remarkable cave system of the Trang An Grottoes. Rowing boats will take us through the labyrinth of caves, tunnels and emerald streams for a fascinating visit before continuing to Ninh Binh Town to board the night sleeper train.
Day 7: DMZ and Hue. Morning arrival at Dong Ha and a chance to discover the country’s more recent history with a day trip to the infamous DMZ, (demilitarized zone), to visit some of the key sites of the Vietnam War, including the Vietcong tunnels at Vinh Moc, Hien Luong Bridge on the 17th parallel, which marked the border between former South and North Vietnam, and Khe Sanh Combat Base – scene of some of the most intense fighting of the war. Overnight in Hue.
Day 8: Hue. Time to check out the numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites of this historic city and former imperial capital: morning cruise by ‘dragon boat’ along the Perfume River to visit some of the majestic tombs of the former emperors and afternoon walk around the ancient Citadel.
Day 9: Hoi An. Short, scenic drive to nearby Hoi An Town with stop-offs on the way at mountainous Bach Ma National Park and the beautiful and spectacular beach at Lang Co.
Day 10: Hoi An. Well-preserved and charming, World Heritage site Hoi An was one of SE Asia’s most important ports during the 17th – 19th centuries. A half-day tour of the old town and waterfront area and a free afternoon to discover the picturesque old streets at your leisure or bicycle down to the nearby beach for a dip or massage.
Day 11: My Son. Morning relaxing or a visit to the bustling silk market with an afternoon trip to the atmospheric ruined temples of ancient My Son City – Vietnam’s most important site of the former Cham Empire. The city was occupied from the 4th to 13th centuries before succumbing to its powerful Khmer and Vietnamese neighbours.
Day 12: Danang Time to explore some of the sites of the Danang region with a visit to the famous China Beach, Marble Mountain and the fascinating Cham Museum before an evening departure for London, via Saigon..
Day 13 Optional extensions (at extra cost) include:3 days to relax at a beach resort on unspoilt Whale Island.

Hanoi to Danang-Vietnam to have second budget carrier

Private airline VietJet Air said it would operate as a low-cost carrier with its first commercial flight next month.

The airliner will offer services between Ho Chi Minh City- Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang, and Hanoi-Danang in its initial stage of operation.

It will become the second budget carrier in Vietnam, besides Jetstar Pacific.

VietJet Air will also be the second private airline to offer domestic services besides Air Mekong, and the fifth to offer civil flights in Vietnam together with Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar Pacific, Air Mekong and Vietnam Air Service Co.

Earlier the carrier was expected to join hands with Malaysian-based low-cost airline in a joint venture to set up the budget carrier VietJet AirAsia, but the two parties failed to reach an agreement two months ago.

Vo Huy Cuong, head of the aviation department of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), said VietJet Air had leased three Airbus A320 aircrafts from a foreign airline and the first of them was expected to arrive in Vietnam this month.

He was quoted by the Saigon Times Online as saying that the airline was licensed to bring the aircrafts to Vietnam before getting the air operator's certificate from CAAV.

By Air

Hanoi has fewer direct international flights than Ho Chi Minh City, but with a change of aircraft in Hong Kong or Bangkok you can get to almost anywhere.

Vietnam Airlines: Hanoi to destinations throughout Vietnam. Popular routes include Hanoi to Danang, Dien Bien Phu, HCMC, Hué and Nha Trang, all served daily.

From Noi Bai International Airport, you can reach Hanoi by taxi, public buses and shuttle buses.

- Taxis to downtown Hanoi from airport, the journey will be between 35-70 minutes, depending on traffic. At the airport, you will come across taxi drivers who may want to deliver you to a hotel of their choice to collect a commission, but if you insist, they usually give in. Otherwise, take another taxi. It is cheaper if you pay in dong, and the exchange rate won’t work to your advantage.

-  Public buses from airport to Hanoi take about an hour. Bus #07 crosses the Thang Long bridge and goes to the Daewoo Hotel on the western part of Hanoi. Bus #17 crosses the Chuong Duong bridge and goes close to the old quarter.

-  Vietnam Airlines provide shuttle minibus from the airport to the Vietnam Airlines office in Hanoi and vice versa. The shuttle service will often offer to take you direct to your hotel for an extra dollar once they reach the Vietnam Airlines office.

By Train

The main Hanoi train station is at the western end of Pho Tran Hung Dao; trains from here go to destinations south. Foreigners can buy tickets for southbound trains at counter 2, where the staff speak English. It’s often best to buy tickets at least one day before departure to ensure a seat or sleeper.

To the right of the main entrance of the train station is a separate ticket office for northbound trains to Lao Cai (for Sapa) and China. Tickets to China must be bought from counter 13.

To make things even more complicated, some northbound (Lao Cai and Lang Son included) and eastbound (Haiphong) trains depart from Gia Lam on the eastern side of the Song Hong (Red River), and Long Bien on the western (city) side of the river. Be sure to ask just where you need to go to catch your train. Tickets can be bought at the main station until about two hours before departure; if it’s any closer to the departure time, go to the relevant station and buy tickets there.

Tickets for all destinations are sold in the main station, though there are two counter halls, north and south, serving the respective destinations.

By bus

Most of the “open-tour” bus itineraries either begin or end in Hanoi, with Hue the next (or previous) stop and from there to Hoi An, Nha Trang, Dalat, Mui Ne, Ho Chi Minh City, and other cities in Vietnam, depending on the bus company.

By taxi

Taxis are the best way to travel long distances. Taxi fares are not always consistent, and the rates for each taxi company have not been standardized.

The recommendation is to only use the reputable and reliable taxi companies. These are Hanoi Taxi (Tel (04) 38 535353), Taxi CP (Tel. (04) 38 262626), Mai Linh Taxi (Tel. (04) 38 616161).

Most taxi drivers speak limited English, so it’s a good practice to get your hotel to write the name and address of you destination in Vietnamese to show the taxi driver, and get your hotel’s business card in case you get lost.

 By Motorbike driver & Cyclo

For lone travelers, rides on the back of motorbikes (actually low-powered scooters) are popular too (known as xe om, literally meaning motorbike-hug), but the cyclos, or pedicabs, are a cheap way to make shorter trips.

Motorbike drivers  and Cyclo can be found on virtually every corner, especially in the Old Quarter. Expect to be offered a ride every half-block (or more). You should negotiate a fare in advance. Many drivers will accept US dollars as well.

 Car & Motorcycle Rental

To hire a car with a driver, contact a hotel, travellers café or travel agency. The main roads in the northeast are generally OK, but in parts of the northwest they can be dire in the wet season and only suitable for a 4 wheel drive.

Motorcycles can be arranged by most hotels. This is good for making lots of trips around the city for individuals or duos, but be careful: Hanoi traffic is very difficult place to sharpen motorbike skills. Park on the sidewalk with other bikes, and be sure to lock the front wheel. Locals will help arrange the bikes near their stores. Many shops that have bike attendants will give you a ticket in exchange for parking your bike. The ticket will either have your license plate number written on it, or the ticket itself will be numbered, with that number subsequently chalked somewhere on your bike. In such cases (where you’ve been given a ticket), the attendants may ask that you NOT lock the steering column or front wheel of your bike so that they can rearrange the bikes as customers come and go.

Hanoi to Danang-the Danang Sea

Danang is Vietnam's third largest city, and is located on the South China Sea coast, midway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Hanoi to Danang-Ho Chi Minh to Danang).

The city itself has neither the atmosphere of Hanoi nor the hustle-bustle of Ho Chi Minh City, but has its share of sights, and is close to the charms of Hoi An and the imperial capital of Hue.

The regions surrounding Da Nang (My Son, Quang Nam) was founded by the Cham practicing Hindus most possibly 3000 years ago, serving as the capital city and centre of the Hindu Champa Dynasty. Vietnamese invasion into the region in the 17th century significantly halted Cham development and during the Vietnam War, vast monuments and buildings were bombed. Given Danang was the first point of colonial invasion, many vestiges of French architecture are present in the historic buildings. The city has grown rapidly in recent years, and has a 2008 population estimated at 900,000. Until recently, this growth was mostly outward and infill, but now there are high-rises going up. There are many remnants of the "American War" leftover in Da Nang. Each bridge has a different builder, whether they be French, American, or Vietnamese. On the way to the popular tourist spot; China Beach, the ruins of a military base remain in the form of helicopter hangars, although these are now more easily spotted at the airport, which serves both civil and military flights.

The city is often overlooked by tourists but is one of the most friendly to backpackers in all of Vietnam. China Beach, a former R&R destination for American G.I.'s, is now home to a small community of guest house owners, marble statue shops, and other various trades. Some of the most beautiful and isolated beaches in Vietnam are found here, among some of the friendliest people. This is a must stop for the budget traveller.

Until relatively recently, Da Nang was somewhat hostile to foreigners, a consequence of the attitudes of those who then controlled the provincial government. In the early 90s, however, this changed, and since the late 90s the provincial [actually autonomous city] government has been enthusiastically pursuing foreign investment and developing infrastructure. Da Nang has some of the best roads in the country -- the coast road is at least four lanes from northern provincial boundary to southern provincial boundary. Compared to either Hanoi or HCMC, traffic in Da Nang is always relatively light, although huge trucks blare along every now and again and there are brief 'rush hours.' Development is visible and rapid; the city has expanded tremendously in the last ten years, and several multi-story buildings as well as more beach resorts are under construction, and there are now at least three large supermarkets as well as a Metro wholesaler. This also involves redevelopment of areas near the city beaches across the river, with whole blocks of old housing being razed and new roads installed and luxurious villas constructed.

The downside to the very laid back, less serious and frenetic, aspect of Da Nang is that even locals frequently complain that there is nothing to do except drink, which they do a lot. This is not really true -- there is a zoo, a soccer stadium, many tennis courts and pool halls, several large modern discos/night clubs, etc., and of course the beaches and Son Tra peninsula. However, it is also true that coffee and beer drinking are the most common leisure activities of most local residents.

The hottest months of the year are June, July, and August, when the temperature can get to as high as 40 degrees Celsius, and it is generally very dry. There are usually tropical storms in October and November.
